For biomedical & pharmacological librarians, searching scientific literature can be complicated. Elsevier, producer of the renowned EMBASE database, has drawn on more than 30 years of experience indexing the world's biomedical and pharmacological literature to create this sophisticated EMTREE drug and disease thesaurus. EMTREE provides a powerful tool to classify the content of biomedical information in a structured way that facilitates comprehensive searching and high precision retrieval by database users. EMTREE currently (2005) comprises 49,782 terms ("preferred terms") and 204,505 synonyms. It incorporates MeSH terms used by the National Library of Medicine. Each year, new MeSH terms from the preceding year are reviewed and added as preferred terms or (more typically) as synonyms. The 2005 edition incorporates several enhancements, such as the addition from 1,671 preferred terms. Examples of new preferred terms are 'alamifovir', 'pertuzumab' & 'transcriptomics'. An example of a MeSH term is 'epigenesis, genetic', a synonym of EMTREE preferred term 'genetic epigenesis'. This three-volume set is an indispensable tool for both novice and experienced searchers.

The term theory, itself, has been conceived of in various ways in the psychological literature. In the present dictionary, the strategy of lumping together all the various traditional descriptive labels regarding psychologists ‘best guesses’ under the single descriptive term theory has been adopted.
