Mine, Yours, His, Her... Decisions

Sixteen-year-old Alexis believes her parents can't possibly understand what she's going through. Her father means well but never defends her from her mother's criticism. Alexis's mom constantly analyzes every action, every sentence, and every wardrobe choice. Alexis feels stifled under the constant scrutiny. Her best friends decide that the best way to get her out of her funk is to take her to the party of the year. To sweeten the deal, they mention that Anthony, Alexis's crush, will be there. Although shy, Alexis hits it off with Anthony, but she doesn't want to do anything more than flirt. Anthony has other plans, though, and takes advantage of Alexis while she's drugged, turning a supposedly festive occasion into a horrifying nightmare. After the assault, Alexis is depressed and withdraws from her family and friends. She can't stand the thought of her mother judging her. Alexis wants to stop this one unspeakable incident from destroying her life but isn't sure how to do so. However, as she navigates new relationships with her family members, finds friends willing to stand up for her, and discovers a fresh passion in life, she gradually discovers how strong she truly is.

The Book of Job is one of the Writings (Ketuvim) of the Hebrew Bible, and the first poetical book in the Christian Old Testament. Addressing the theme of God's justice in the face of human suffering - or more simply, "Why do the righteous suffer?" - it is a rich theological work, setting out a variety of perspectives. It has been widely and often extravagantly praised for its literary qualities - "The greatest poem of ancient and modern times," according to Tennyson, and the only book of the Bible on one list of "The 100 Best Books of All Time".The Book of Job consists of a prose prologue and epilogue narrative framing poetic dialogues and monologues. It is common to view the narrative frame...

The Republic is a Socratic dialogue, written by Plato around 380 BC, concerning the definition of justice, the order and character of the just city-state and the just man-for this reason, ancient readers used the name On Justice as an alternative title (not to be confused with the spurious dialogue also titled On Justice). The dramatic date of the dialogue has been much debated and though it might have taken place some time during the Peloponnesian War, "there would be jarring anachronisms if any of the candidate specific dates between 432 and 404 were assigned". Plato's best-known work, it has proven to be one of the world's most influential works of philosophy and political theory, both in...

John Stuart Mill's book Utilitarianism is a philosophical defense of utilitarianism in ethics. The essay first appeared as a series of three articles published in Fraser's Magazine in 1861; the articles were collected and reprinted as a single book in 1863. It went through four editions during Mill's lifetime with minor additions and revisions. Although Mill includes discussions of utilitarian ethical principles in other works such as On Liberty and The Subjection of Women, Utilitarianism contains Mill's only major discussion of the fundamental grounds for utilitarian ethical theory.

In what relation the Apology of Plato stands to the real defence of Socrates, there are no means of determining. It certainly agrees in tone and character with the description of Xenophon, who says in the Memorabilia that Socrates might have been acquitted 'if in any moderate degree he would have conciliated the favour of the dicasts;' and who informs us in another passage, on the testimony of Hermogenes, the friend of Socrates, that he had no wish to live; and that the divine sign refused to allow him to prepare a defence, and also that Socrates himself declared this to be unnecessary, on the ground that all his life long he had been preparing against that hour. For the speech breathes throughout a spirit of defiance, (ut non supplex aut reus sed magister aut dominus videretur esse judicum', Cic. de Orat.); and the loose and desultory style is an imitation of the 'accustomed manner' in which Socrates spoke in 'the agora and among the tables of the money-changers.'
